Whole Grain
Time: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
Tang Teaching Museum Somers: Join us Thursday, September 25, at 6 pm, for a Whole Grain: Experiments in Film & Video screening of two works selected by Carrie Mae Weems, renowned American artist, National Medal of Arts recipient, and Skidmore鈥檚 2025 McCormack Visiting Artist-Scholar Resident. Weems鈥 own The Shape of Things (2021, US, 40 min., digital) an extended meditation on anti-Black violence and Black resilience across time and space, precedes Quentin Tarantino鈥檚 revenge epic Django Unchained (2012, US, 165 min., digital). This screening foregrounds Weems鈥 McCormack residency at Skidmore, which will culminate in a performance entitled Memorial, Memory & Meaning: A Performance with Artist Carrie Mae Weems on Saturday, October 4, at 2 pm, in the Tang.小蓝视频 the FilmsThe Shape of Things (2021, US, 40 min., digital) is a three-channel version of a project that acts as a collage of Weems鈥 visual archive over the previous decade, editing together newly shot and found footage from moments of protest, action, and resistance to white supremacy as well as lingering, loving imagery that evokes Black joy. Weems鈥 power as an orator is highlighted in the narration, which anchors the many chapters of this forty-minute-long video work. Amidst the political landscape of the Trump presidency and the uprisings of 2020, Weems converted her unease into an extended meditation on anti-Black violence and Black resilience across time and space. The beauty of the human face, the human body, and their movement on high-definition film is presented through a lens of Blackness that both celebrates and mourns the current state of 鈥渢hings.鈥 As in her entire body of work created through the decades, The Shape of Things offers a critique made more potent by moments of intense and overwhelming visual pleasure.Django Unchained (2012, US, 165 min., digital), written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, features an award-winning cast. Jamie Foxx stars as Django a slave who teams up with bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to seek out the South鈥檚 most wanted criminals with the promise of Django鈥檚 freedom. Honing vital hunting skills, his one goal is to find and rescue the wife (Kerry Washington) he lost to the slave trade long ago. When their search ultimately leads to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), the infamous and brutal proprietor of 鈥淐andyland,鈥 they arouse the suspicion of Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson), Candie鈥檚 trusted house slave. Now their moves are marked and Candie鈥檚 treacherous organization closes in on them.小蓝视频 the ArtistCarrie Mae Weems, a conceptual artist, unpacks and confronts constructions of race and femininity in the pursuit of new models to live by. Grounded in the specificity of her lived experience as a Black woman but universal in its explorations of family relationships, cultural identity, power structures and social hierarchy, her artistic practice is primarily photographic but also incorporates text, fabric, audio, installation, and video. Informed by narrative storytelling, folkloric traditions and the observational methodologies of the social sciences, her approach to image-making ranges from staged and serialized narrative to appropriation and adaptation of archival and ethnographic imagery. Weems takes aim at the complicity of the photographic medium in propagating dehumanizing tropes and the historical omission of Black women from fine art institutions and canons. Weems lives in Syracuse, New York with her husband Jeffrey Hoone. She is currently the Artist in Residence at Syracuse University.小蓝视频 Whole GrainThe Tang Museum鈥檚 Whole Grain series explores classic and contemporary work in experimental film and video. Whole Grain is programmed by Assistant Director for Engagement Tom Yoshikami. All events are free and open to the public.

Memorial, Memory & Meaning: A Performance with Artist Carrie Mae Weems
Time: 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Tang Teaching Museum Payne: Join us Saturday, October 4, at 2 pm, for a live performance and screening of Leave Now! (2022), a video made by renowned artist Carrie Mae Weems, Skidmore鈥檚 2025 McCormack Visiting Artist-Scholar Resident. The film offers an unflinching glance at the migration story of her grandfather, Frank Weems, a tenant farmer and prominent union organizer in Arkansas, who attempted to sue the state of Arkansas for his mistreatment and separation from his family. In light of his failed attempt, Weems raises the significance of reparations as a moral imperative and source of remediation and justice. Weems will be joined by pianist Vijay Iyer and violinist Jennifer Koh. Presented by 小蓝视频鈥檚 Office of Special Programs, Art Department, and the Tang. This event is free and open to the public. 小蓝视频 the Artists Carrie Mae Weems, a conceptual artist, unpacks and confronts constructions of race and femininity in the pursuit of new models to live by. She is currently the Artist in Residence at Syracuse University. Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential, prolific, shape-shifting presence in twenty-first-century music. A composer and pianist active and revered across multiple musical communities, Iyer has created a consistently innovative, emotionally resonant body of work over the last three decades, earning him a place as one of the leading music-makers of his generation. His honors include a MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artist Fellowship, three Grammy nominations, and the Alpert Award in the Arts. His newest albums are Defiant Life (ECM, 2025), his second suite of duets with visionary composer-trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith; Compassion (ECM, 2024), featuring his celebrated trio with drummer Tyshawn Sorey and bassist Linda May Han Oh; Trouble (BMOP/sound, 2024), a composer portrait album comprising three of his orchestral works, including the titular violin concerto performed by Jennifer Koh; and Love in Exile (Verve, 2023), his Grammy-nominated collaboration with Arooj Aftab and Shahzad Ismaily. The New York Times observed, 鈥淚yer鈥檚 music has always been both intelligent and unpretentious, complex without being opaque; [he] ponders a phrase with obsessive rumination, unveiling layers of shifting, subtle emotion, before letting it fly with joyous abandon.鈥 He is a professor at Harvard University. Grammy Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh is recognized for her intense, commanding performances, delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance. She is a forward-thinking artist dedicated to exploring a broad and eclectic repertoire. She has expanded the contemporary violin repertoire through a wide range of commissioning projects and has premiered more than 100 works written especially for her. Named Musical America鈥檚 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year, Koh has won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, Concert Artists Guild Competition, and an Avery Fisher Career Grant. She has a BA in English literature from Oberlin College and studied at the Curtis Institute, where she worked with Jaime Laredo and Felix Galimir. She is an active lecturer, teacher, and recording artist for Cedille Records. Koh is Artistic Director of the Kennedy Center鈥檚 Fortas Chamber Music Concerts and Artistic Director of arco collaborative, an artist-driven nonprofit.

This event is organized by Northshire Bookstore and co-sponsored by the Environmental Studies and Sciences Department and Sustainable Saratoga. Half of all ticket proceeds will be donated to Sustainable Saratoga. Here Comes the Sun is an honest but hopeful assessment of the climate crisis from 鈥減robably the nation鈥檚 leading environmentalist鈥 (Boston Globe). McKibben makes the case for sun and wind energy as major asset in the fight against climate change, tracing the history of solar power from a grassroots environmental project to a potential disruptor to the fossil fuel economy. By embracing these alternatives, he argues, we can reclaim the mantle of technological progressivism in a way that benefits the many rather than the few.

Whole Grain: Leviathan (2012)
Time: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Tang Teaching Museum Somers: Join us Thursday, October 23, at 6 pm, for a Whole Grain: Experiments in Film & Video screening of Leviathan, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and V茅r茅na Paravel鈥檚 groundbreaking and immersive portrait of the contemporary commercial fishing industry. The film will be introduced by Emilio Vavarella, Assistant Professor of Media and Film Studies at Skidmore.小蓝视频 the FilmA groundbreaking, immersive portrait of the contemporary commercial fishing industry, Leviathan was filmed off the coast of New Bedford, Massachusetts 鈥 at one time the whaling capital of the world as well as Melville鈥檚 inspiration for Moby Dick; it is today the country鈥檚 largest fishing port with over 500 ships sailing from its harbor every month. Leviathan follows one such vessel, a hulking groundfish trawler, into the surrounding murky black waters on a weeks-long fishing expedition. But instead of romanticizing the labor or partaking in the longstanding tradition of turning fisherfolk into images, filmmakers Lucien Castiang-Taylor (Sweetgrass) and Verena Paravel (Foreign Parts) present a vivid, almost-kaleidoscopic representation of the work, the sea, the machinery and the players, both human and marine. Employing an arsenal of cameras that passed freely from film crew to ship crew; that swoop from below sea level to astonishing bird鈥檚-eye views, the film that emerges is unlike anything that has been seen before. Entirely dialogue-free, but mesmerizing and gripping throughout, it is a cosmic portrait of one of mankind鈥檚 oldest endeavors.小蓝视频 Whole GrainThe Tang Museum鈥檚 Whole Grain series explores classic and contemporary work in experimental film and video. Whole Grain is programmed by Assistant Director for Engagement Tom Yoshikami. All events are free and open to the public.

They will discuss art and ideas at the intersection of religion, ritual, and rest, with a special emphasis on the cult of Mithras, a mystery religion of the Roman Empire for which a ritual meal was a central component. The talk will be followed by a modern Mithraic feast, details to come on the Tang's website.Dunkerley Dialogues pair Skidmore professors with artists in a conversation format, which is often a catalyst for new connections and understandings across 小蓝视频s, and can spark new ideas for all participants. Dunkerley Dialogues are made possible by a generous gift from Michele Dunkerley 鈥80.This event is free and open to the public. The program will include ASL interpretation.小蓝视频 the SpeakersSheila Pepe is best known for crocheting large-scale, ephemeral installations and sculpture made from domestic and industrial materials. For more than 30 years she has accumulated a family resemblance of works in sculpture/installation/drawing, and other singular and hybrid forms. Sometimes drawings that are sculpture, or sculpture that is furniture, fiber works that appear as paintings, and table top objects that look like models for monuments, and stand as votives for a secular religion. The cultural sources and the meanings twisted together are from canonical arts of the 20th century, home crafts, lesbian, queer and feminist aesthetics, 2nd Vatican Council American design, an array of Roman Catholic sources as well as their ancient precedents. The constant conceptual pursuit of Pepe鈥檚 research, making, teaching, and writing has been to contest received knowledge, opinions, and taste.Brigitte Keslinke has a BA in Archaeology and History of Art and Architecture from Boston University and an MA in Classical Art and Archaeology from the University of Colorado Boulder. She is a PhD candidate in the Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World program at the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked on projects in Italy, Cyprus, and T眉rkiye, and her research centers on the intersections of foodways, religion, and identity. Her dissertation is a comparative study of sacrifice and feasting in the worship of the Roman god Mithras; in it, she explores how the cult was adapted by and for the various communities into which it was introduced.Gregory Spinner is a Teaching Professor of Religious Studies at 小蓝视频. With a PhD in the History of Religions from the University of Chicago, his intellectual interests are wide ranging. His research focuses on Jewish texts and practices, while he teaches courses that include the Bible, Midrash, and comparative studies of myth, ecstasy, and material religion.
